Overview

Construction contributes roughly five percent to the gross domestic product and employs approximately 13.5 percent of the workforce. The decline of the sector that began in 2016 continues.  Lending by commercial banks to the sector declined by approximately 40 percent in 2017. Despite this, construction of a new airport terminal in Tobago is scheduled to begin by mid-2019 and is expected to drive the demand for construction materials and services. In addition, the government plans to construct 300 homes in Tobago and do various infrastructural developments .

Leading Sub-Sectors

  • Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) products are in high demand.
  • In the lighting subsector, opportunities may exist in niche and energy efficient products.  There may be stronger opportunities for export of a wide range of higher-technology lighting products in schools, healthcare facilities, elder care facilities, offices, and sports facilities.
