Overview

Agriculture contributes less than one percent to the national gross domestic product and employs approximately four percent of the population.  The sector has historically been overlooked in favor of the extractive industries. Due to TT’s colonial history, cocoa, coffee, and sugar were the main agricultural exports to Europe.  Currently, the government is prioritizing agriculture as a way to diversify the economy, conserve foreign exchange, increase the country's food security, and provide sustainable employment opportunities.

The main environmental issues affecting agriculture in TT are water shortages, disposal of agricultural chemicals, forest fires, soil erosion, and squatters living on forested hillsides.  TT has a significant need for imported meats due to low local production.

Leading Sub-Sectors:

  • Cattle and dairy goats for milk

Opportunities

U.S. firms have considerable opportunities providing food for consumers and supplies to support a nascent agricultural industry. There is demand for food processing and packaging equipment and materials.
