Overview

Romania is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union, and it is a Strategic Partner of the United States.  The country maintains good relations with its neighbors and regional partners.  Romania has committed to the NATO guideline of spending at least 2.0% of GDP on defense through 2027.  Due in part to a one-year budget cycle, however, the country has not yet met this spending level.
Nevertheless, the expected increased spending levels present a clear opportunity for U.S. defense equipment and service providers.  Romania is also looking to modernize its own defense industry through international partnerships.  American firms may be asked to contribute to this goal.  The Romanian Parliament must approve defense acquisitions in excess of €100 million ($110 million).
