The Mauritanian government hopes to further develop its travel and tourism industry, but has yet to dedicate significant resources . The ministry in charge of tourism is the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism.  There is currently no sign of an exclusive travel and tourism ministry, nor a team dedicated to the foreign promotion of Mauritania.  This has created limitations for the tourism industry in Mauritania.  The hospitality sector is very underdeveloped.

Mauritania offers a number of opportunities for tourism development:  a long and undeveloped coastline, including two national parks (Banc d’Arguin and Diawling) that attract large numbers of migrating birds; stunning desert sites for trekking and camping; UNESCO-listed ancient caravan cities such as Chinguetti.  The majority of international tourists have been French.  An improving security situation in Mauritania in recent years has led to steadily increasing numbers of foreign visitors, although the overall total is very low.

Opportunities

Given the new international interest in the oil and gas sector and the numerous corporate travellers entering the country for short-term trips, there exist opportunities in the hospitality sector, including hotels, restaurants, and training centers.
