Mauritania has  754 km of coast along the Atlantic ocean and is among the world’s most plentiful ocean fishing grounds. The coast, stretching from Western Sahara to Senegal, provides the government an opportunity for revenues in hard currency, employment, and diversification of the economy. The country started systematically exploiting its fisheries sector in the 1970s, and since then has signed bilateral fisheries deals with several  countries, including Senegal, Algeria, Russia, Japan, Turkey and the EU.

The EU, for example, says its fishing deal with the Mauritania, known as the EU-Mauritania Fisheries Partnership Agreement, is Brussels’ most important fisheries agreement both in terms of volume and product diversity. These agreements enable more than 100 European vessels from 11 EU countries to fish in Mauritanian waters.

The fisheries sector in Mauritania offers opportunities for foreign investment. Only 10-15 percent of the fish caught are unloaded at Mauritanian ports, and a much smaller percentage is processed locally.

Opportunities

Once fish is caught and brought onshore in Mauritania, it is usually exported (frozen or fresh) without being processed. The Government welcomes investment in valued-added processing in the fisheries sector.
