Overview:

The Bahamas relies on imports of practically the full range of food products to meet the needs of its population and the over 6 million tourists, mostly from the United States, that visit the islands each year.  The Bahamas imports 86% of these agricultural and food products from the United States (2014 figures).  Other sources of consumer-oriented agricultural products are Brazil, Peru, U.K., and Canada.  As U.S. products are already widely available in The Bahamas, new entrants may find it challenging to find a niche among other U.S. products in a competitive market.  In addition, U.S. exporters are likely to face increased regulatory controls on agricultural products imported into The Bahamas in the future and heightened competition from suppliers from outside the region.

Subsector best prospects:

In 2015, top U.S. exports of consumer-oriented products included, in order: poultry meat & products, excl. eggs; beef & beef products, dairy products; snack foods; fruit and vegetable juices; prepared food; pork and pork products; wine and beer; fresh vegetables; and non-alcoholic beverages (excl. juices).  Demand in these areas is expected to increase with the development of new high end resort development.

Opportunities:

U.S. food stuffs are sold in supermarkets, upscale stores, smaller stores and mom and pop outlets, fast food outlets, full service restaurants, cafes/bars, etc.
