Spain is an enormous market for fish and seafood. In 2018, Spain was the fourth largest importer of fish and seafood in the world and is a net importer of these products, after the United States, Japan and China. Spain has the largest fish processing industry in Europe and has a high per capita consumption and a high per capita expenditure on fish and seafood products. Furthermore, Spanish fish and seafood production through commercial fishing and aquaculture is not sufficient to meet domestic demand and imports thus remain a key element in sustaining the category. Top sellers from the United States in 2018 include lobsters, surimi, cod, hake, albacore tuna and squid.
