Admission to practice as an attorney-at-law, as well as professional behavior, is regulated by the Legal Practitioners Act, which was last amended in 2010.  In order to practice law in Guyana, it is necessary to be a national of Guyana and hold a Legal Education Certificate, or obtain a special authorization.  A petition to be admitted to the bar must be made to the High Court.  For foreign lawyers to practice in Guyana, the Minister of Legal Affairs must make an order to this effect.

The accountancy profession is regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants Act, which establishes a Council of the Institute to undertake this work.  Membership of the Institute is open to Guyanese citizens.  The Council also has the discretion to extend membership to persons who are members of an approved
